'Showtune' in the making

'SHOW TUNE' in the making:MY FINAL PIECE IS AT THE BOTTOM PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM TO LOCATE MY FINAL PRODUCT!
Day 1 : This is just a first draft however I know i've already crammed a lot on there.Im taking my time from now on and adding the small little details. As well as some other bits I have added some some girls legs to represent the stage production of Chicago.

Day 2:
On day 2 : I photo-shopped the legs off of one of my friends (above 16 dont worry) and but them in the centre of the 'O' so it looks like they are coming out of it, this is just the first to the tweaks that will be happening onto day 3.I am however starting to feel that my image is to dark therefore I'm going to start taking other picture that can maybe bring more light into my front cover.

day3:I have decided to delete the picture as I thought it was to dark and felt that it I was going to have a dark image I will need something light to contrast with the image and as I have played around with my image I have found nothing suitable for that can play the light to contrast the dark.therefore the image is gone completely which has left me with article names and the masthead.
I have decided to add stars into my front cover as they can also symbolise with the stars of the stage and has a hidden meaning. As I progressed today a lot of things I throught clicked into place and I added the image that showed part of my face but not a direct angle.I have not edited this picture, and I have done this so that the light can contrast with the dark. However now I feel it's quite plain therefore behind this image I have made added the stars again so that they are everywhere, however not the dark has taken over again I have changed the main image opacity so that the light from that balances the colours.
Here is my result after today:

Day 4:I've had people look at my work and I have chosen to develop it by just doing another pages
document and copying the relevant information over to it and developing it from there and here are my results from today.Things i have yet to do are re add the stars back into it, however with a bigger image as you can tell they are all the same picture but copied in my other first draft of this layout to my front cover.

Day 5:Today I focused mainly on the other 2 aspects of the magazine whoever I wanted to see if this page looked well again if I added the stars back in to symbolise the other stars.Comment below on what you think and today I have also defined a lot of my accuracy with say the shapes.here are my results:
Day 6:Yes I have completely changed it as I wanted to come away from the normal conventions of a magazine and really go into the fun up-beat show tune genre I have decided to base my music magazine on.
Day 7: I have done my new re-make of my magazine in the style of the artist toulouse Lautrec moulin rouge posters, and it is finally a design I'm happy with therefore this is my final result.Hey the said the world was made in 7 days turns out my magazine was to.

Day 8: And finally here is the magazine that I am happy and sticking with.I have adjusted the background and got rid of a few features.
Day 9: looking back at my similar magazine 'Broadway' i noticed the colour of the mast head and article spoilers where the same but they looked odd all in blue therefore i was trying different colours and this is my final result.

'Double page spread' in the making

MY FINAL PIECE IS AT THE BOTTOM PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM TO LOCATE MY FINAL PRODUCT!

Day 1:All I have simply done is put in the correct page dimensions and added my text to it's correct page and altered it slightly. Here are the results:

Day 2: Today I have mainly focused on my double page spread.I have attempted to take my double page spread away from the conventional page and changed the layout of it however I have used one central image, which is the only thing that you can relate from my magazine to a conventional magazine to mine.I have yet to add some head shot to fill in the gaps on the second page as at the minute there is to much white at this moment in time.
Day 3: I thought the right hand side looked abit plain so I have decided to fill it with musical ratings.
Day 4: Today I have decided to tweak and fine lined everything and this is my FINISHED product of my double page spread.

'Contents page' in the Making

MY FINAL PIECE IS AT THE BOTTOM PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM TO LOCATE MY FINAL PRODUCT!

Day 1: So I have just started my contents page, now I will admit I had no design ideas going into this, meaning i've research some however because my music genre is so unique I couldn't really research any similar pages so I was going on pure imagination.I know I would like this page to represent the life of a star, so chilled and relaxed yet so important and vital to the stage. This is why I have the foot like holding up the title of the page, because without the foot the title will fall, with contrasts with a star, without the star there is no good performance.

Day 2: I have started to tweak some fonts now and have started to sort of number pages drastic change to say its only day 2 that i've worked on this but I'm happy with the way it's heading.I have decided to change the overall font of the title contents because I felt that font just looked like the font on the back of some playing cards therefore I have gone and am going to stick with this font 'Orange Juice'.
I'm still playing around with a-bit of colour and sizes of certain things like the images.

Day 3:Today I have added a little bit more of the musical element by adding the good witch from wicked and I have edited the back ground colours and some of the fonts so that it doesn't look so plain. Here are my results from today.
Day 4: today i have tried to make my contents page tidier and attempted to add little tweaks to see if i could decrease the amount of free space.
Day 5:we I have just developed my contents page and I have now started to try all the colours matched together
Day 5: As I have decide to change my whole theme to suit my artist of Toulouse Lautrec i have decided to make my main image really cartoony to tie in with the front page so heres the results and I feel this might be the version I stick with.

Day 6: I have decided against the carton foot because I feel it made the page feel quite plain therefore. and here is my final page.
Day 7 :RIght this is it I'm not changing it anymore. Here I have added my forth original images and wrapped the text around it and here is my final result.
Day 8:I have tweaked some colours and fine lined everything, here is the FINISHED product of my contents page.

My Progress

In my first term I feel that I have made a lot of progress as I hadn't even done one lesson of media before starting this class. Our first major task was to design a magazine for a school. At first I found this task really hard as I wasn't familiar with any of the software we using, I wasn't even that sure about using the apple Macs to be honest. So my first attempt was okay I guess for my first try, however when we went through it I saw the mistakes I have made and I know now not to make them therefore i've learnt something I guess. You can't really see the title and even then it was a mouthful to pronounce.I made common mistakes like underlining and not lining my page up probably therefore I will not be making them next time but overall for my first magazine I feel it's an okay attempt. The feedback I got was:
  • Underlining makes it look abit tacky.
  • Colours like on the tytitle are abit confusing to read.
  • Make sure th page is lined up probably.
  • Make sure the fonts match as the acticles spoilers dont match.
  • The starat the top looks tacky and makes the magazine looks cheap.
  • The magzine doesn't really have a focus.(No Main image)

My contents page I found was easier to design then the front cover and this was because there is less of a resisted convention towards a magazine.I took a picture of a friend over the age of 16 and used her arm to carry the numbers. My contents page looks alittle bare and I know there are alot of images and they make a busy theme throughtout my content page. It's a school magazine therefore I knew pictures of people in uniform and educational props may be the way to go.The people on the left are under the age of sixteen therefore we had to get consent from there parents to photograph them which they all had signed, and authenticated as one of the children is another person in my classes sister. The feeback I got for my contents page:

  • Your page numbers dont match as your first page would be your front cover.
  • The colour of the textmakes the magzine look cheap and un even.
  • You must follow the rule of thirds as the 3 people down the left hand side of the page are not in line.
  • The images of just the business dress and the arm is quite effective.
  • The page in it but it's quite plain next time add a quote or something.

More Picture Editing

Today I have edited some more pictures and decided that I kind of went off the track on musicals and show tunes and focused on the stage to much therefore I have used the microphone as a carrier of a music.Honestly I only did this just to ring home that it's a musical magazine but as I started the develop the image and change the colours, saturations and lighting I began to quite enjoy the picture. We took this picture within our school against a black back drop therefore no removal of the back-ground was needed, in fact I think the black back-ground help make the colours of fire involved more lively and fierce, which are the kind of emotions and passions involved in this genre of 'SHOW TUNES'.When changing the colour I noticed that my arm had sort of been faded out and the shapes have been made a lot sharper meaning that I think the edited image is hard to read, like people that haven't seen the before shot might not no what it is.This image was taken as a live shot as we were just messing around with the microphone and imaged to capture this image within that free moving second within the person nothing I had taken a picture at that exact time.

This image I really like although it's me basically taking a selfie , 'posed shot'.I like it because one it hides my face and also it has a lot of darkness within the photo, which is what I wanted in the portrayal of the character on the front row.All I did for this photo was change the saturations lights and hue and the back-ground was the same as the first one it was black and blended out nicely so there was no need to remove that back-ground.Obvisiously I'm trying to take my front cover down the 'Wicked' musical route and I feel I have achieved that within this photo, however I don't think this image really states that it a musical,'SHOW TUNES' magazine.so maybe if i choose to put this image on my front cover I will have to find a way to make this more musical. I can maybe put both the images I have done today within one, this will show the emotion that I wanted on my front cover with the hint of music needed within my front cover image.

Narrative Double Page Spread

Elena Book

The olden days:

Well it was 1957,musicals were quite the hit then, you know we didn’t have the television box thing people have now-a-days if you wanted entertainment you would walk to the nearest video and go to a show. I remember the first show I ever went to it was ‘West side story’, oh that was wonderful I was around 21, my father took me and my mother there for my birthday. Oh it was a wonderful night and between you and me the person that played Tony weren’t bad looking. That I think was the first time I knew that on the stage was I’m meant to. From that point on every Sunday morning after church I would head to the local community centre and take part in the classes for aspiring actresses, I did that for about 3 years until we did a stage production of our own. We just did the simple snow white from that Disney company I got the part of snow, which at this time was an advantage because I didn’t know there was a scout in the audience. Well I tried my best and watched the man approach Kenny our director after the show, Kenny was over the moon jumping up and down putting all the props on bouncing around the stage and then just as I was about the leave he approached me. I thought to my-self ‘oh know I messed up didn’t I’, he said, ‘there was a scout here he want to see what else you do meet him at the light house theatre next Thursday the name is Jim partelli’. I was just in utter shock I mean it seems like yesterday I was sitting next to my dad in the theatre. So anyway I went along to the light house and got taken to a room just to the left of the reception desk, I remember because the door said stars only that brought a smile to my then young face. Yes so I went inside this room and Jim was sat there on this couch with a cigarette in one hand and whiskey in the other he greeted me and invited me in. he told me to stand in the light so he got a good a lot at my completion he must have been staring at me for 10 minutes that got awkward fast. Jim invited me to sit down and we discussed what journey I had to take to achieve the dream of an actress; however we read a part of a script and that went amazingly well and then he said the word’s that in theory changed my life. Jim said, ‘I would like you to work in my new stage production’. Before he could even say what it was called I agreed and smiled so much that my cheeks were stuck in that position for all of half an hour. We then went on to discuss the path my life was starting to take he said you need an agent and a personal stylist and we have so much to do. Still amazed I just sat there and nodded. Before I knew it I was in rehearsals I managed to get my friend Katie a part in the cast with the Lead cast with ‘ME’, I lost touch with her after we did that show but I heard she went on to do wonderful things so maybe my change of paths didn’t just benefit me.so we did this show and then the offers just started rolling in I went onto to star in Hairspray and Wicked oh that’s one of my favourites. Life had been kind to me I was successful I had my family’s support I had a place in New Jersey it was great. So you know as the years went on and technology advanced Films started to do musical films and funny enough I was actually a part of a Disney musical production called lemonade mouth not too long ago actually that was so much fun like you don’t have to worry about messing up because they can do so much editing is it now-a-days. So my young show days are over now I mean I’m 57 I got 1 kid 3 grandchildren and my loving husband it’s been 38 years now so all in all I have lived a really good life, you know I thought my days in the lime light are over until I got the call to come onto the radio I agreed and did a couple of days per week then that turned into every weekend and now I play show tunes on the radio and it’s like re-living my life it wonderful I love it and am I now ready to set into my old ages.

Writting an Interview with some Artists.

Indiana Menkel-Opera singer

Interviewer:So hi,Indiana nice so meet you,

Indiana: hi,

Interview:So your staring in the musical hairspray now,so hows that going?.

Indiana: Oh yeah, it's going really well you know learning the songs, learning the dance routines and meeting alot of new people along the way,you know not many jobs in the world allow you to do that it's just great i love it.

Interviewer:Oh brilliant,so being on stage how does that make you feel?

Indiana:Proforming of stage still makes me nervous,I still get butterflys before every song or everytime im on stage,I still feel proud when I heat the sound of the crowd cheering after every proformance. When your on stage it's like your you but your not you.Like when I did the stage production 'Wizard of OZ', I was dressed in a witches outfit and wearing layers and layers of green face paint and it's like having an alter ego on stage and I feel that it helps you boost your proformance so much it makes me want to keep persuing my career on the stage.

Interviewer:Wow okay,so being in the various roles that you have played have you had any imput in any of the songs, dances or any of the costume design?

Indiana:well when writting the songs I leave that to the professinals I mean opera is a hard genre to write for let alone sing it I think that one is best left to the professional.the dances oh my gosh I'm such a horrible dancer and im sure lots of the other actors and actresses and dancers get really cross with me.I mean one time we did this kind of swivle thing with our hips and I kind of over spinned and ended up sitting on the chrogographer whoops, so know dancing I also leave to the other professinals again. Now the costumes yes I have had imput on them because I want not just my proformance to mean something but everything I do or of course wear to mean something.

Interviewer:Wow that quite some stories there, okay so we know about your stage life but, what about your film life?

Indiana:well I love stage but yes lately I have found myself edging towards the film industry I mean I did the voice over for the new disney princess and a couple more voice overs for things like 'The Simpsons' or 'Family Guy'.I also did a couple of films were it was just me acting in front of a camera which might I add is very odd they like follow you everywhere, there are everwhere you turn, I think camera's are like gremlins but that just me.

Interviewer: (laughs) so do you think this camera here is a gremlin?

Indiana: yeah look at it all it needs it pointy ears and your there.

Interviewer:Right now if its okay with you weare gonna ask some fire questions and your reply will be a short anwser, Is that okay?

Indiana:Sure yeah let's go.

Interviewer:favourite Food?

Indiana:(Ermmmmm) pizza.

Interviewer: Favourite film?

Indiana: Notebook- hands down.

Interviewer: Role model?

Indiana:Marilyn monroe-iconic

Interviewer: and finally favourite musical and a song from the musical?

Indiana: Hairspray and (Ermmmm) 'Hey muma welcome to the 60's' fewwwww.

Interviewer: WOW thankyou so much for being her today it's a pleasure to meet you.

Indiana:yeah you to.

Interview: see you soon.

Photo Decisions

Location for my pictures:
When choosing a location for my photo's I knew immediately I want to do it inside as my genre does not nor in anyway include nature or the outdoors. My genre is mainly on a stage therefore I knew that I wanted a theatre type of room. Before doing all of this I did a 'health and safety' Risk assessment which you can find in one of my previous blogs.I took the procorsions I needed to assur ethe safety of me,my episuiment and my models. When choosing a location to take my picture I decided to get a camera from within my school and take photos in my the schools theatre. As it is my school you have to be very careful as to who you take picture of therefore no under 16's will feature in my magazine.I also had to be careful as I was taking picture on private property but after asking the appriorate member of staff I was allowed.

My Pictures-Edited

Today I have taken some pictures for my magazine and just tried out some simple techniques using pixel photo editing online. I found this very basic editing technique quite eye-catching and effective. I have tried many options of editing and this is the one I found in the time that a did it most successful. All I did was change the hue and saturations to my colour more vibrant and the played around with the brightness to control the back and the shadowing from the body. In my personal opinion I really like all of these pictures. I like the first one because it has no colour, believe it or not I feel the contrast between the blacks and white could have a deep meaning into the artist or character that the artist portrays. Maybe the darker black can show the anger and hurt the character has endured of my it can show the dark power it possesses and light can symbolise the good within her. Now all this is really deep and meaning full however when added with colours the meanings kind of become lost as a lot of colours have a lot of different means like Green is the colour for nature however it can also be the colour for evil. Also regarding this first picture I am worried about it being too plain for my magazine as my genre is 'Show Tune' I feels the cover show be colourful and outgoing now mono.
Now this next picture I like it very much because the back ground has stayed black and white however the model clothes and props have been highlighted with some major colours like the blue and yellow. The hat has then tinted brown which gives it a vintage kind of retro look to it. the shadowing also creates a kind of floating feel or as the shadow has turned black could maybe symbolise the hiding of the darkness within the chacrater.I do like the images of the witch on the flaw as it show emotion and the passion that can be contained within the music. However as i'm writing this on a different day to when I started these photo edits I feel that i am deffinatly not going to use the photo edits with the half green a red women as they have been lost in translation as my magazine has developed in a different way to what I later predicted.

Investigate the Convention of Magazine Pages

How many pages should your magazine have?
-Well I have researched it and the normal magazine on the shop shelfs have 100-200 pages depending on the fandom for the magazine, like a top of the pops has 80 and home magazine has 200 so a number between that would be suitable for my magazine as it's so niche i dont really have a guild line to follow.

where all the features ar going to be placed?
-well I was thinking of having an advert attached to the front cover and then ease into the articles a we progress. The first couple of page I can have a letter form the editor and then maybe some reviews on the up-coming shows and the recent shows, after that I can cut to another advert and then maybe a article not the main article but something to intregue the readers that what shows are coming to the west end or not or who the composer is going to be.

How will your contents page be designed?
well I was thinking with on main images and a couple of small ones dotted randomly round the page. Some of the main text will then be in a coloured box however not every text will be because I dont wanna make it ot boxy.
whats your pages size?
Page Size8 3/8” x 10 7/8” is the most economical and common magazine page size. Most press and bindery equipment is designed to produce this size efficiently and with minimum paper waste. Oversize and undersize magazines can be produced but their cost per square inch is almost always higher.

what types of fonts are common for for bolky texts within a magzine?
-I looked into different fonts most commonly used in magazines and one that kept popping up was 'Garamond'.This font is clean and most commonly used within magazine in the UK.In my research I found that it was voted the second most common font to be used within a magazine after 'Helvetica'.After this research I feel that Garamond might be they way to go because I dont really want to alternate my fonts to much within my magazine therefore I pick Garamond because it's clean easy to read and the date it was released corresponds with the age of my target audience which might have some affectin some way.

Deconstructing Photographs of Some Artists

Deconstruction of some already artist.Im doing this so I can get an impression of how I would like my photographs to look.

1.This is Idina Menzel more popular for her know role in Disney's Frozen has also stared in the stage production 'Wicked',here is a picture of her within the stage production that i'm going to deconstruct.

First of all let's talk about just Idina. She is within a stage production and in a character therefore she is dress as the character she is portraying which in this case is the wicked witch of the west.she is wearing dark and pale colours however the purple could symbolise alot more.purple is the colour to symbolise royality and expense which could maybe reflect
The life the witch once had before turning wicked. However the colour is merged with the green involved in the entwining patterns with the garment, which could suggest the emotions that she has been through which eventually resulted in the witch becoming evil. The green is to symbolise natural however this is a very dark shade of green suggesting that she has now become unnatural and the characters change throughout has not wise. The fact that only her face is uncovered also gives the impressions the character has self-esteem issues and that she feels that closed inside meaning she doesn't trust anyone around her gives herself to herself. She has think black gloves on her hand meaning that she is trying to conceal herself and is not going to let anyone show her true colours. Her face is pure green as at this point in the play the character Idina is portraying has turned evil, which is why the green skin is there to symbolise the unnatural horror that has become like for example The hulk. As side from that Idina has no more make up on her face. Make-up is commonly used to make people boost their confidence within their appearance therefore make-up is there to make you more pretty in someone theory. Now this witch has no make-up on her face aside from the green face paint, which could infer that the witch isn't beautiful and make-up can make someone standout, now there is no make-up that normal people would wear therefore suggesting she isn't abit of the crowd which could maybe suggest she is lonely. Now the hair traditionally women wear the hair down to make them look more attractive, however the witch Idina is portraying has her black hair symbolising a gothic route to all this has her hair tied back behind her head. Finally on her appearance the all famous witches hat it's plain black therefore mysterious, dark and sinister. Plain is always a thinker for example if you watch the program 'Sherlock’, Sherlock can deduce everything about a person just by what they are doing but when Irene Adler walk in, in the nude Sherlock cannot tell a thing about her because she is plain at that point in the program she was a mystery.

The back-ground surrounding the witch is misty.I have just looked up misty and I came up that if someone has a misty eye they are full of tears so as to blur the vision. So maybe the back-ground can symbloise the witches eyes as the rest of the background is just plain black of witch that I explained in the description of the witches hat plain+dark and sinister.she is standing quite close to the camera suggesting she is trying to get her point across so much.

2.

This
Photograph is lively and out-going and obviously this girl Katharine is having fun.
Let’s start by just looking at the actress herself preforming on stage. First of all her clothes they are light and cheerful. White is a colour that symbolises purity and has a calming feel to it, which is why stereotypically people portray god is pristine white gowns, also white doves is a symbol of love however the symbol itself is to do with the dove the white is to adds more of an explaining to the object it-self.to me it looks like she has cherry's on her top, now this could be taken in two ways one fruity or to a unfortunate sexual route that has appeared in this generation. Someone said that sex is everywhere and believe or not it is and weirdly is used as a selling point of which it does work. She is also thrusting her chest out  and holding her arms out suggesting to me anyway a sort of princess feel to her pose particularly snow white when she’s signing. These little sexual tweaks are maybe put in place so that all eyes are on here regardless, a sneaky way to get there audiences sub-continues attension. Now her hair you can see that it's curled and that is traditionally or more modern thought of as a way to curl in men in the 1950's primarily, she also has the same kind of style that were popular back then. However she is not wearing that much make-up or there is none that I can see in this photograph.to me although she is trying to look that a lady of the night has kind of failure that ambition and is now a house wife. With the crème behind the pattern on the top it just reminds me of End from Hairspray.

The background surrounding this actress katherine is very dark and is a good way to build the tension, however the light beams behind her could maybe represent the passion within her voice meaning that the back-ground now has an up-beat feel towards it and the lights help highlight her proformance.

Different Fonts for my Title

These are my 5 not 3 (whoops) fonts I have chosen to be my possible fonts for my masthead.I need help deciding please.

Overall:All from 1001 free fonts and downloaded then onto my computer for free and one of these is going to be my masthead on my magazine.Fonts are really important within the magazine because everything is chosen for a reason and everything symbolises something therefore fonts shouldn't be excluded from list of importance, some people will pay up to 5,000 poundthat Also I picked the color red because red symbolizes passion which is: if you listen to the songs involved in shows is involved in the artist voices plus, red is a general color involved in shows according to my research as it in theory opens and closes the show with the velvet red curtains.

RayGun & Sniffin' Glue

RayGun
My throughts on this magazine;

In my opinion in really like this magazine it has so many unique qualities involved in just the front cover. For starters the colour scheme, now I would never put them colours together put somehow on here they work on this cover I mean the way are presented in this type of slashed painted way really reveals the creativity involved. Now the title that is still in convention with other magazines that are in mainstream however, the rest of the magazine is so not in convention. The main image is a banana like what the hell does that have to do with music it's so ridiculous it's funny. Also the barcode is just stamped straight in the middle of the main image like that's their main draw to the magazine, I love it.Now they have used sexual references to engage there readers like most magazine does as there is a pair of lips surrounding the banana at the bottom again engaging readers through this weirdly popular way. They have the bit about what the magazines includes at the bottom left hand comer with is all clumped together which is why I think this magazine works and it's very well done according to my standards, I would defiantly buy this magazine in a shop.

Sniffin Glue

Now this magazine is just so basic I also love it.Now this magazine was designed in the 70's therefore computers weren’t really popular or up to the standard it would require to even create a front cover that doesn't look like it's been written. However they wanted a magazine about music around that time so that's what they did it obvious that some hand drew it and wrote it.so they got someone to right the cover and then they scanned it to make the front cover for their hundreds of magazine. Now they down fall that I have is there is no colour fair enough the technology wasn't there but I think they had colouring pencils back in the old days didn’t they. Although I do like there wonky hand writing and the different people hand writing they used really help make the magazine personal which I guess is what they wanted as they are not selling them thousands at a time. You see I can't see a barcode and i know they had them which mean this magazine was only meant for the local people because otherwise you would see some type of manufacture stamp or something or that presents a trademark. They haven’t even been able to draw there division line straight but overall in some sort of weird way I long for this magazine to come to light again as it's just so unique and personal.
